The chart below traces the development of many models and variations of Mosin Nagants. Each country with more than one type is color coded to match. The "depth" of a particular line does not indicate the time over which it took place. For example, Russian and Soviet development from the adoption of the M91 to the M44 took place over 52 years while Finland moved from the M91 to the M39 in only 18 years, yet each line has a similar number of generations. Many less common variations such as Finnish sniper and target rifles and specific experimental prototypes are not included for the sake of space, nor are changes to a model during production shown. For details on changes to each model see their respective pages in the Mosin Nagant Models section. Use of particular models by other countries is not included if no significant improvements or changes were made to the rifles themselves.
