The Mosin Nagant design has been used all over the world for decades, including service in the Spanish Civil War.  In this "dress rehearsal" for the Great Patriotic War (WWII) the Soviets backed the Republican (Socialist) government and the Nazis backed Franco's Nationalist forces.  Mosin Nagant rifles were among the arms furnished by the Soviet Union during the conflict, which took place from 1936 to 1939.  While many of the rifles purchased with gold from the Spanish treasury were new production M91/30s, older M91s were also included.  This particular example is a 1916 Remington in typical "rough" condition for a Spanish Civil War veteran.   There is pitting over the surface the barrel and receiver and all parts are mismatched.  What makes this rifle especially interesting is the stock which is a Spanish made replacement in some type of walnut other than the typical American walnut that Remington used.  It is rather crudely made with the action sitting very high and the magazine/trigger guard recessed rather deeply.  It has the Spanish "MP8" cartouche and a bent wire sling hanger in the rear slot.
