This 1907 Izhevsk Dragoon is unique because it has all matching serial
numbers and all original parts which is very rare for a Mosin Nagant of this era.
This rifle is owned by Clay who was kind enough to take the pictures and allow them to be
used on 7.62x54r.net. Not only does the bolt serial number match, but the cocking
knob is also numbered to match.
The magazine floorplate and buttplate are also matching and the buttstock
has a "Deutsch Reich" German property mark from WWI. This mark explains
how the rifle survived intact for decades without being upgraded by the Soviet Union or
modified by Finland. Since Germany did not adopt the Mosin Nagant on a wide scale it
did not undertake to upgrade them although a few were converted to 8mm.
By far the rarest feature on this rifle is the intact "type 1"
Dragoon handguard which wraps around the rear sight base and has the sight graduations
stamped in the wood. This design is very fragile, as can seen by the slight damage
at the rear, and most were cut down to the "type 2" pattern with only short ears
at the front of the sight base.
The front of the handguard does not have a metal cap like the later M91/30
and carbines. The solid Dragoon barrel bands were used until about 1930, but are
seldom seen on the relatively common updated Dragoons today.
