In the mid-1930s the Soviet firearms designer Simonov experimented with
some variations on the M91/30. These dealt primarily with the front nosecap and
bayonet attachement, although several versions have been observed. This example is a
1936 Tula that is owned by "JMG" who provided the pictures and allowed them to
be used here. Besides the alteration at the nosecap, the stock is also fitted with
wire sling swivels which would take the place of the standard "dog collars".
It is not sure if these are part of the experiments or were added later, possibly
in another country.
Here the "Mauser type" nosecap can be seen, along with the
unique barrel bands and front sight globe.
The left buttstock has marks that may be related to the trials, but that
is only supposition. The right side is marked with the standard Tula cartouche and
date which matches the barrel date.
The front action screw hole is "pillar bedded".
