During the Cold War the Soviet Union provided East Germany with Mosin Nagant rifles
which were then marked with a "triangle 1". This seems to be a combination
of property and grading mark indicating "first condition". A
"triangle 2" mark, meaning "second condition", is mentioned in some
references but has not been documented on a rifle. The triangle one can easily be
mistaken for the Izhevsk arrow in triangle arsenal mark at a quick glance. However,
the triangle has a wider base and it is usually placed higher on the barrel shank.
There is also a smaller version of the triangle one mark normally used on Nagant revolvers
but it is sometimes found on Mosin Nagants. The documented models are M91/30s,
including ex-Dragoons, M38s, and M44s, along with Nagant revolvers.
